Jonathan Álvarez runner-up in category 2 with BRC B49

The Spanish Mountain Championship completed its 2017 calendar with the dispute, on September 30 and October 1, of the Ordino-Arcalís Subida. To the Andorran test came the BRC driver Jonathan Álvarez in the fight for the title of the
Category 2. To win the championship, Jonathan needed to finish in second place but the weekend was more complicated than expected to the Asturian driver living in Marbella.

On Saturday, bad weather, with rain and thick fog, forced to cancel the first official climb, leaving the three race sleeves for Sunday morning. Without having tested well the day before, and very aware that when the three official raises were followed, any error could be fatal to his aspirations, Jonathan found it difficult to find the rhythm in the peculiar Andorran layout, a four kilometer long climb, with high slopes and no less than twelve paellas that follow each other along the route.

At the wheel of his BRC B49, Jonathan was fourth in the first race, in which the floor still showed humidity after heavy rains the previous day. And although he improved his times in the remaining two, he could only recover one position, finishing third, less than two seconds behind the second place that would have given him the final victory in the championship.

With this result, Jonathan added a total of 152 points in the total count of the season, exactly the same amount, and reached with the same results (four wins, one second place and two third), that his rival in the fight for the title of category 2, César Rodríguez. Finally, it was the Galician driver who was awarded the title by virtue of the application of the second tiebreaker criterion foreseen in the RFEdA regulations, as he had a fourth place in the discarded score test while Jonathan did not have more results because he did not have been able to participate in the Fito after his Falperra accident.

An outcome that, despite the logical disappointment at not having achieved the championship for which he has fought so much throughout the year, does not detract from the magnificent season carried out by Jonathan Álvarez with the BRC B49. The Spaniard repeats how runner-up of Spain of the category 2, and in the final podium of the national contest he is also accompanied by another pilot of Bango Racing Cars, the Navarrese Garikoitz Flores, who has finished the championship in the third position.
